Katniss: A plant commonly used by Native Americans for broadleaf arrow heads. Cinna: A poet in a Shakespeare play who tried to start a rebellion, which later got him killed. Flavius: Latin for Golden. Golden lipstick? Peeta: He's a baker. Peeta sounds pita, which is a type of bread. Rue: to feel regret, remorse, or sorrow. Which is all the feelings this character gives me. Effie (which is the best may I add): derives from the name Euphemia, or “fair speech” (eu = well, good; pheme = voice) which makes sense, because she is an escort and public speaker. However, there is more to the name Euphemia than just being able to talk well – there is a whole story behind the name that is rather shocking when compared with Suzanne’s Hunger Games. Euphemia was a young christian girl who was martyred because of her faith. Where she lived, the governor made a decree that all citizens had to take part in ritual sacrifices. Euphemia, or Effie, however, refused to take part in these sacrifices, and she and her friends were thereby tortured. One of these tortures; being trapped in an arena with a wild bear; ended up killing Euphemia. So, by refusing to follow in her government’s footsteps and not take part in the sacrifices, she inadvertently brought about her death. Add any you have that have connections to the character!

I don't think Finnick or Haymitch have meanings. Those were two I couldn't find either

For Finnick, could it be related to fin? Like of a fish? Or could it be finn, which means "fair"? I don't know, these were the only things I could think of.

what about Thresh?? this is what i found that it meant to separate the grain or seeds from (a cereal plant or the like) by some mechanical means, as by beating with a flail. like grain and seeds=agriculture=district 11

I can't believe Suzanne thought of that. When I write a story I just give the characters random names...
The common name for Primula vulgaris (a plant with little flowers) is Primrose. I don't think this really has a connection to the character but just thought I'd say it :]

I really wanna know what Haymitch means. I've never heard of that name so I think it has a special meaning. Can't find it anywhere though...

I think Suzanne thought through most of the names but not all of them.

I found one on Hawthorne but it was spelled Hawthorn..... any of numerous plants belonging to the genus Crataegus, of the rose family, typically a small tree with stiff thorns, certain North American species of which have white or pink blossoms and bright-colored fruits and are cultivated in hedges. !!!!!

Posy- a flower, nosegay, or bouquet and OMG THIS ONES AWESOME! Pollux- Greek, Polydeuces. Classical Mythology . the brother of Castor. and I hope that someone sees my reasoning with this one..... Coin- a piece of metal stamped and issued by the authority of a government for use as money. ANYONE??? I think because in 13 they had to be stamped with a schedule by the authority of the government for use as a (weapon) and money (kind of) but that's just me looking REALLY far into the context. XD

I thought that Effie came from the word effusive, which means overly exaggerated. It fits her character pretty well

most of the names of those in the capitol have little to no meanings - with the exceptions of cinna, lavinia, coriolanus, etc. but the ones like flavius and venia are just latin, as are brutus and cato from district 2.
