I just finished reading The Golden Compass (or Northern Lights, depending what country you're from) for the first time a few days ago. I got a late start, I know, but better late than never!
So the question comes down it this: Is the movie worth watching or would I literally be wasting away a couple hours of my life?
I know the film doesn't live up to the books standards because Summit cut out any reference to the Church (aka half the freaking plot!) It's gotta be bad when even the director steps forward and says that he never would have made the movie if he'd known the studio would re-edit the film to exclude all the details.
But is there ANY worth to watching it?

There definitely is! The movie itself (at least in my opinion) is still an enjoyable watch, and Dakota Blue Richards (Lyra) is perfect! The problem is that it doesn't have any of the darkness or depth of the book (think HP 1 type of maturity) and makes asinine plot changes.
I still bought the DVD and watch it from time to time. Go watch it, I say!

In my opinion its hard to watch the movie of a book that you love because you want it to be so much like the book when in reality it never is. Theres a few things here or there that I wasn't happy with but as a whole I feel they did a decent job. I would say yes, you should watch it. Its always worth watching the movie of a book if just to laugh and admire the book more.
I rather liked the actress they picked to play Lyra. She's very cute, and I feel she fits the role very well. Spunberry is right, there really isn't much depth to it, but I still enjoyed it for what it was.

personally i though the movie was very poor in comparison the the book, and i never even bought it when it came out on dvd, i still tell people to read the trilliogy however, nothing ever matches the magic of the books

The movie is decent, but it's very different from the book. The actors and actresses did a very good job, and the CGI...wow <3 However, the differences annoyed me a lot, and it ends about halfway through the plotline of the first book :/
