I know this seems like a crazy question... but I must ask. Are there any fans out there who seemed to love Hunger Games more than Harry Potter? I'm in a deep debate with a friend of mine. He honestly believes Hunger Games are better. I TRIED to respect his opinions, but I'm a high functioning fangirl so of course I couldn't.... If you do agree with him, kindly explain why. other than that... let me hear it!

For me and it is just my opinion, I think HP is better than THG overall. Sure THG had a great storyline but the characters in general were really not that memorable. In addition, they were bland and weakly made(Again, my opinion). I know that HP had seven books for Rowling to develop the characters but I fell in love with the cast instantly at Book 1 whereas THG never really made me love its characters to an extent that I would mourn at their death (Well, maybe SPOILERS Finnick only).
What really makes me love a book is character attachment. And I'm pretty sure this also applies to many. I really enjoy spending time with the cast as the series progresses. All those goofs and how they came to be is what would really make me relate to them. Additionally, although this may be also in a negative light, it would make me want more as a series ends. When HP ended, I really wanted more. I wanted to know what happened within the 19 years. On the other hand, after THG ended, it didn't really made satisfied nor wanting more. Honestly, I didn't care what happened to them after Book 3.
Furthermore, and I would try to keep this as short as possible since the post is getting, THG had a lot of parts where it was painful to read. Not bashing THG or anything but the hype is just getting too much.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan, and Harry potter will always be a huge part of my life. JK has a much better writing style then Suzanna collins and JK work flows better and has deeper meanings. Hungergames was a great book, but catching fire and Mockingjay i think lacked a bit more, and left us with alot of unanswered questions. where as Harry Potter dealt with everything. and spread it out over more books so everything could be explained better, Mockingjay felt rushed at the end to fit it all in, and even failed in that x

Okay so I have to say I like HP better, because I grew up in a family full of obsessed potterheads, and I learned to read with it. That being said, it is slightly better well written than HG.
From a literary standpoint, they are both pretty equal. Their plot lines are both developed using the British Alchemical Standpoint meaning that every little detail is really important and the books are, in a way, like a formula. Each thing has to happen a certain way and each character symbolizes something. There are three stages per book, but those stages also appear in the series as a whole. The stages are Black, White, and Red. The end of the stage is usually indicated by the death of a character. I can't quite remember which THG character the black stage has, but in HP, it is Sirius Black (and I'm talking about the stages in the series as a whole). The white stage in HP is ended with the death of Albus (which means white in Latin) and in THG it is when Peeta is taken by the Capitol (he dies a symbolic death). The red stage generally ends at the end of the book, so there are no characters. That being said, HP's characters are more thought through and every single character symbolizes something.
The one other reason I like HP better is that the symbolism in is is much less inherently obvious than THG. In THG, their names symbolize what the character's position of the society is (E.G. Katniss=Root and Katniss is the root of the society) that and HP is much more detailed specific world created for the story.

Thank you all so much! I'm trying to explain to my friend all of this, and I'm terrible at putting things in words! He just doesn't seem to understand...

I can kind of understand where your friend is coming from because I went through a phase where I honestly thought I liked THG more. But now I realize it's because THG satisfies one's need to be shocked. Even after reading it multiple times, the sheer violence and inhumanity shocks me, and I feel like Collins captures that essence very well. It's a book unlike anything I've ever read before. But Harry Potter is timeless. While HG captures certain emotions well, HP captures EVERY emotion. Even though it may feel like a children's book after a while, as soon as you start reading you remember why you loved it so much in the first place.

In my opinion nothing is better than Harry Potter. The Hunger Games was good, but I just love Harry Potter so much. Hermione is so pretty and smart.

I loved the hunger games. It was a really good series and I fell in love with a lot of the characters. It of course effected me emotionally and punched me in the feels. This being said, it was not as good as harry potter. Jo is a better writer than Suzanne. Don't get me wrong, they are both great writers. However, Suzanne just is not as amazing as Jo, in my opinion. Harry Potter was just flawless. It was so beautifully written.
