OK, so a lot of my friends, relatives, and even teachers are nagging me to read the Harry Potter series, but I feel like it's just gonna be a bunch of kids playing with wands (don't start ranting, I know nothing about it). So I'm asking you guys, the HP fandom, if you recommend it or not. And please, prove me wrong about the kids with wands comment, is there like a hidden love plot or a good amount of action in it?

It is most definitely not a bunch of kids waving around wands. There is a reason it's the most sold series of all time. The story is more rich then anything else, the characters are beautiful in how they are created, as you read it you will grow more and more attached to every single page. I have read the seventh book many times, and every single time I have both cried and laughed at the end. Not once have I ever done that with any other book.
It isn't just about the action or love, that is nothing compared to the epicness of the series. In reality action and love just proves the point of a kids book even more. Yes it has both, but it doesn't let it override the sense of joy and amazingness that comes out of it. This lets both adults and kids enjoy the book equally.
I definitely recommend giving it a shot, you will never look back.

Harry Potter has been my favorite book series all my life, so I'm biased here. But I'll do my best to give an accurate response.
Yes, it is a book about a bunch of kids wave around wands. But thats not ALL it's about. It's about growing up. It's about making hard decisions and choosing self-sacrifice over selfishness [Harry and countless others]. It's about all the virtues that today's society lacks and shows the true horrors that face us when negative thoughts like segregation and hate are too heavily spread [Voldemort and his Death Eaters]. It's about friendship and the hardships friends face, but they can overcome if they don't give up on each other [Ron]. It's about finding and losing loved ones but continuing with your life knowing they'd rather you be happy than miserable about their loss [Countless others to avoid spoilers]. It's about love. It's about holding on to those you love even when they lose love for you and doing all you can to protect them [Snape]. It's about letting go even when it's hard and opening your heart up to others who can return your feelings [Harry]. It's about having the confidence in yourself to achieve your goals even when you've been put down all your life [Hermione]. It's about going for it even when others tell you that you're too weak, stupid, or dense [Neville]. It's about not being afraid to be different and to love yourself for your uniqueness [Luna]. It's about not living in the shadows of those who came before you and rising up to the occasion despite your fears [Ginny].
It's not just about wands and magic. It's about life and all the hardships that come with it.

Yes give it a try. And while it does have kids waving around wands, its much more than that. And I am bias since I've been reading the series since I was 11. So I've grown up with Harry and everyone else. Its friendship and struggle, love and oppression. It makes one cheer, cry, scream and laugh. Sometimes all in the same chapter. Its brilliant and I ask that you at least give it a chance.
Sometimes it can seem to drag on with certain places and the later books do take a more moody/angsty turn, but that comes with the Main character growing up and acting that way. There are plot homes and places where you just scratch you head in confusion. Just, dont give up on it yet.

DO IT. I am in my mid-twenties and these books changed my life.
The few 2 will seem a bit young for you, but they're still better than 90% of age appropriate books. They're so much depth and emotion. It's the best series ever, in my opinion.

Though I just found the first one boring and I guess that in a way made me want to read it less

I must be honest. YOU NEED TO TRY IT! Harry Potter is a classic, it's way more than people waving wands. It's about love overcoming evil in the darkest times.

Definitely should at least try. The kids waving wands remark is like classifying the Hunger Games as 'games about people fighting to the death' or Eragon as 'another dragon book'

You should definately read them. I grew up reading Harry Potter and then watching the films. I went to collect some of the books and midnight, I went on the opening day to most of the films and I learned sooo much from this series it is unbelievable. I truly think it helped shape the person I am today, I even wrote an essay on it in my English class!!! Siriusly (lol I couldn't help it!) you will not regret it. You can't help but love the amazing characters, the inspiring lessons in it and you will never forget it until the day you die. XXX

I got the Harry Potter series for Christmas and just started reading them. I don't understand why I never read them before, since all my favourite books involve magic in some way. I just started reading The Chamber of Screts and I say that you should definitely read them. You wont regret it!

Theses books are totally awesome! And just in case some one tells you that you're gonna go to hell for reading Harry Potter... Tell them that the author herself didn't believe in magic therefore making the theme of the books friendship and love, not magic.
Just a heads up in case you ever run into this problem... XD
