Confession time! I've never watched Doctor Who before. But I want to start!
The question is WHERE?
There's classic episodes, specials, and the newest series! And from the newest series, some people only stick with the episodes featuring David Tennant!
Where did you begin and where do you suggest I begin?

I started with Tennant cause he was on at the time. Then I checked out 9 and people started suggesting that I check out the original series. Most fans I found liked Tom Baker-4 the best so I checked out some of his episodes and loved them. And so, I went from there. a few of Davison-5, a few of McCoy-7. For the others, I checked out fan stuff online. And now I'm onto 11. Never saw anything of 8 though which is too bad, though I hear they have some excellent audiobooks for 8. Each doctor has their own quirks and oddities that make them awesome.
My suggestion is to start small and then branch out. Theres alot of history, and alot to take in.
And while 10 was my first doctor, he had his flaws just like they all did. He was awesome, but (and I'm probably going to be hung for saying this) but he wasnt the best.

YAAAYYY!!!!! So you definitely DON"T want to start with the classic series. they have horrible graphics and are really cheesy, although worth watching eventually. If you have patience with shows, then start with 'Rose' the first episode of the new series. It has Christopher Eccleston (9) and explains the Doctor really well. The only problem is that it is REALLY cheesy! I promise it gets better. If you want to watch an episode that gets you hooked on the series right away, then I would suggest 'Blink' because that is the ultimate "I've only seen one episode, but I at least kind of know what Doctor Who is about"

It sounds good). Other than that, he is in nothing. My suggestion is to start small and then branch out. Theres alot of history, and alot to take in. That doesn't mean they weren't good. The cheesyness is something to be celebrated and enjoyed. And take this into account. This show is the longest running british show of all time. There is a good reason for that. Think of it like Star Trek or Star Wars. Yes there have been recent updates and movies with better effects and graphics, that doesn't make the stories any less important. Dont take everything at face value, especially when you really wanna give it a try. Check out the old stuff before you diss it. And while Blink is good (and will scar you for life to the point where you will never look at a statue or an angel the same way again) maybe you should start with one that actually involves the Doctor more. Why not check 11th Hour from the recent doctor?

Except that some of those earliest episodes have been lost for years. SO start with what you can find. Go to your local library and check them.

I agree with most of the people posting here, start at 9. Then get to where the show is right now. That's what I did. I just bothered with Doctor Who over the summer while waiting for Pottermore, and I was able to catch up quite nicely. I'm thinking of watching some of the older episodes soon, but soon for me is probably the upcoming summer. When I do, I'm going to be watching them from Netflix (if they have the older ones) OR from this (click here) lovely site I came across on Tumblr when I first started watching the show. I've heard that this site is pretty good, but I can't back that up if you plan on starting earlier than 9.
As for starting from 9 (thought I realize they're also on the previous site, now), I used Netflix until they 'ran out' (or-- that's the term I use) and then I got them from Tumblr users.
Here's "New Who" 1-5: link! && Here's 6: link!.
I realize that the series 6 link is missing the newest Christmas Special, but I'm sure if you have a tumblr you can easily find it with some clever keywords when you search through the tags.
Hope I helped? c: [/font]

Also, If you are planning to watch on netflix, make sure you watch The End Of Time, which is a special also found on netflix, BEFORE you start season five. It is extremely important to the plotline and frankly, very good.

If you're going to watch the new series (the 2005 one) I'd recommend starting with the episode called "Rose". That's what I did.

Yes^ Ten is great, but you won't really get what's going on unless you see Nine.
