Do you like or dislike her?
I personally really couldn't stand her. Everyone who I know that has read it loved her though. I'm giving it another read through to see if I change my mind. I really felt she is to ordinary though. I feel like her only times of actual personality and shining are when she was others. When its just her I always wanted to skim ahead because I found her boring. Haymitch saw this to, that's why he gave up on her for the interview in the first book. I have no idea what Peeta saw, because if I were a guy I'd pass right over her.
I think its becoming a fashion to make the main character to ordinary that you can place yourself in their shoes. Who doesn't wanna read a book were you could be in the spot of the main character. Who doesn't want to relate to a book. I got this same feeling when reading Twilight. I must be weird because I prefer books where I may not completely relate to the character, but I fall in love with the character and become concerned about what happens to them. In The Hunger Games my favorite characters were the side ones. I loved Rue and Prim, they were two of my favorites.

I think that it's kind of sad that they make the main characters ordinary. Every main character is exraordinary in some way, no matter what you try to do. Peeta was special because of his kindness, Prim because of her strength, etc. Like some main characters are stronger or cleverer than normal people. But writers seem to think that they can do the same thing by making them more ordinary than everone else, like Bella in Twilight, who was normal and clumsy, but more normal and clumsy than other people. I'd rather that the characters were someone that I can relate to, but also someone I wish I could be like. Someone that inspires me to stand up for what's right, or be kinder, or smarter. That's why I really love Divergent, because it's all about who you choose to be, not necessarily who you already are. I hope that made sense...

That makes sense, I've actually been thinking about giving it a read. I hadn't heard of it before coming to this site.

Ive only read the first book so far, but I dont dislike her. Its too early to tell if I do like her or not. Her personality is so wrapped up with her family, surviving and Gale at first that its hard for who she is completely has trouble shining through. Right away we are introduced to this person who is gentle to her sister, tough to her mom, and a survivor. By the end of the book, the only thing thats changed really for her is that she doubts even more in her life is real. Theres almost no character growth for her. Maybe she changes a bit by the rest of the books, but its too soon for me to tell.

From personal opinion, having only read them once so far, I did not see any sort of growth in her character. I did not observe much change if any. Maybe thats why I'm so upset with her. I read Harry Potter and loved the fact that I watched them grow up, to mature, and I came to love them. Katniss annoys me because as the books go on I want to smack her and tell her to shove it because Peeta loves her, the people of Panem come to love her, and she seems concerned about all the small stuff that won't matter because of all the big stuff going on. Its sorta like why I get annoyed with politicians, they say oh why yes I'm Prolife and for gay marriage, and I stand here saying well good for you sir but what about the economy? What about the world? Why does any of that matter when people are starving and jobless? You know what I mean?
I know after reading the first book I read the others hating her, so maybe thats why my opinion of her is so low. Don't let my dislike ruin the books for you. =] Though if anything, read them for Peeta. I love that boy.

Definitely. Peeta wants to show them he's not just a piece in thier games? He certainly did! He stayed true to who he was. I'm not even sure if Katniss knew who she was before she went into the Games...

I think you're right, she only seemed to find any bit of identity in the arena. Almost like she could only thrive in the face of danger, which doesn't make for an interesting book if up until that point we're like okay you're Katniss and that means... and she just sits there looking at you with a blank stare.
I reread Catching Fire and the entire time I'm shaking my head like why do you love her Peeta? Katniss why're you so thick? and Finnick why aren't you real?
