..and you say the first one which do you mean? and Why do you think of that one as the first?
I consider episode four the first one because it was the first to be made even though its not the first part of the story chronologically. I've watched Star Wars since I was little and always thought it was a rather interesting story. I think episode four was a good place to start the movies off because when it was made they didn't really have the technology to make the first three episodes as good as they did. I also like that we came to know the characters and then we got to learn their backgrounds. It was like we already loved them and then we got to learn more about them and about their parents.
My dad recently told me that there are tons of books that go past where the movies left off and I think thats really cool. It makes me kinda want to read them to see what else happens to Luke and Leia .

I consider Athe first one to be "A new hope" because it gives the story more mystery and helps the plot move along. If we were to watch Episodes 1, and 3 first than the entire story would be dull with nothing new for us.
We would know Luke and Leia are bother and sister and the kiss would just be even more cringe worthy.
Darth Vader telling Luke that "I am your father" would be meaningless because we already knew it and it would be anti climatic for us.
So to enjoy star wars fully we would have to watch 4,5,6 first :-D
And the expanded universe is very interesting but like other comics and books series there are so many of them it's difficult to get into.
If you're interested in reading them than I would recommend Wookieepedia to get information and update yourself with the story

I also consider IV to be first. Probably because I saw it years before the prequels and I consider the prequels a separate storyline with different main characters.

This is why I never use the term "first one" when referring to Star Wars because there are multiple first ones. Episode IV was the first in terms of release date, though Episode I was the first in terms of chronology. I normally just refer to them as Episode I or IV. And of course if we throw in the Expanded Universe, the "first one" would be the first ever Star Wars comic issue (which predates the original movie by one month!) put out by Marvel, or it can refer to the first issue of 'Dawn of the Jedi,' a brand new comic series being published in monthly issues right now that take place somewhere on the order of 35,000 years before the movies. My dad recently told me that there are tons of books that go past where the movies left off and I think thats really cool. It makes me kinda want to read them to see what else happens to Luke and Leia . As one who's read most of the books (and there are over 100 of them), I can say it's a VERY mixed bag. Some are incomparably brilliant, better even than the films. But there are also some so horrible that a pre-teen in front of his/her laptop typing fanfic could've done a more masterful job.

I have always considered the first one to be "A new hope" mostly because it just sets the whole thing up and it's rather like you go back in time in the newer movies to view Anakin's life before he was known fully as darth vader. I know Speilberg decided to do the movies out of the normal order because of the limited technology, but the way I see it: the older ones go first in the saga. Just my opinion.
